While making sure that your fire prevention and suppression equipment is always in working order is the absolute most important thing you can do, educating employees that are working in a commercial space on how to prevent fires from occurring in the workplace is also of the upmost importance.

What do your employees need to know about fire prevention?indoor-fire-prevention

Keep a tidy workspace.

While it may not sound like an actual fire prevention tip, keeping your office clean and neat can keep fires from rampantly spreading. Clutter can contribute to the spreading of a fire by providing fuel and things to burn. A larger scale mess could also block emergency exits and equipment if fire does occur. It is best to teach your employees to keep papers, files, and other items away from anything that could catch on fire or would be used to extinguish a fire.

Watch out for machinery and oils!

One of the main causes of fires in repair shops, mechanic shops, and industrial factories is friction. The sparks that are created when machinery overheats may ignite a flammable liquid, such as oil, as well as any clothing, rags, or other material. It is important to keep any kind of work area clean and free of flammable materials.

Are your chemicals stored correctly?

When storing chemicals, it is important to make sure that you are storing them in the right lighting and temperature conditions. If some chemicals are stored incorrectly, they could react and create flammable vapors or even explosions.

Are there any electrical hazards?

Electrical fires are one of the most common reasons for fires starting in both homes and businesses. Faulty wiring or malfunctioning electrical equipment are everyday causes of these problems. If you are unsure about the wiring in parts of your building or office, do not plug anything in and immediately call an electrician out to look for any dangerous hazards.

Do your employees have the proper equipment and training?

It is vital to the safety of your employees that they know how to properly handle and operate fire safety equipment. They should know where the sprinkler systems, emergency stop, fire extinguishers, and electrical stops are all located in case of an emergency. Monthly or quarterly training sessions should be held to ensure that all employees are update with the latest safety information.
