Mistakes are never an option when it comes to commercial fire protection. Should an error be made in these systems, irreparable damage could occur to the building itself and all of the contents within it – even costing human life. In order to keep your commercial building safe and sound at all times, it is important that you remember these helpful dos and don’ts of fire protection.

Fire Extinguishers and Fire Sprinkler SystemsCommercial Fire Protection Dos and Don’ts

Fire sprinkler systems are used to control and prevent serious damage on a large scale, while fire extinguishers may be used by individuals to put out a small fire.

  • Do:
    • Schedule routine maintenance through fire protection experts
    • Ensure that systems are properly working through routine tests
    • Store extinguishers in easily accessed areas that are clear and open
    • Train building occupants how to handle an extinguisher
  • Don’t:
    • Neglect any possible issues with the system
    • Keep extinguishers in inaccessible areas that are difficult to reach
    • Forget to test and schedule maintenance

Fire Alarms

Fire alarm systems are the first line of defense against fires, as they notify building occupants to vacate before it is too late.

  • Do:
    • Test your alarm system regularly to ensure that it is functioning properly
    • Create a plan of action should the alarm go off for building occupants
    • Keep updated records of alarm maintenance and activity
  • Don’t:
    • Brush off false alarms
    • Forget to schedule maintenance and testing

Emergency Lighting and Exits

During a fire, the worst possible situation would be nobody knowing where the emergency exits are and not being able to see to get out.

  • Do:
    • Have emergency lighting installed throughout the building so that all areas have light should a fire occur
    • Inspect and maintain lighting
    • Ensure that all emergency exits have illuminated signs
    • Keep pathways to the exits clear of any obstacles
  • Don’t
    • Neglect any burnt out lighting
    • Block emergency exits with potential hazards or obstacles

It is important that you keep your commercial fire protection systems in proper working order at all times. You will be thankful that you did should a fire ever occur.
